My name is Dr Chris Critoph, and I am a Consultant Cardiologist based in Bournemouth, Dorset. I trained in cardiology at major teaching hospitals in London and Australia, before moving to Dorset in 2015 with my wife and 2 children. Although I am an expert in diagnosing and treating problems affecting the heart, I am a strong advocate for preventative medicine, and believe that many heart issues can be prevented or reduced in risk with optimal lifestyle choices.
I practice evidence-based medicine, and of course medication is important in many heart conditions. In patients who already have a cardiac diagnosis, I believe symptoms and outlook can however also be improved with an approach that focuses on a person’s lifestyle.
I routinely use non-invasive heart scans to assess patients and individualise treatment plans.
I think communication with patients and their families is key, and pride myself on delivering information and recommendations in a way that is easy to understand, and actionable.
I practice what I preach, and outside of the hospital I play golf, tennis, do yoga and go cycling with my family every week, plus HIIT, weight and functional training (which my children are a little too young for at the time of writing but expect they will join me soon!) I am passionate about healthy living and wellness, particularly nutrition (I love cooking!) and
stress management including meditation.
I am one of the very few UK specialists trained in assessing patients with a family history of heart disease and sports cardiology. I run the inherited heart disease service in Dorset, and am clinical lead for heart failure at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital.
I also have a weekly blog and video post via my website, summarising cutting edge cardiovascular and wellness research into short-form content to help people live more heart-healthy lives.
