“My tests are all normal — so why do I still feel like this?”
If you’ve said this to yourself, or to a doctor who then had nothing left to offer you, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common and most frustrating experiences in modern healthcare: your blood tests come back “normal,” your scans are clear, and yet the fatigue, brain fog, digestive issues, or unexplained aches haven’t gone anywhere. When standard tests show nothing but symptoms continue, the problem usually isn’t that nothing is wrong — it’s that nobody has looked at your whole health picture yet, or considered whether the right tests were run in the first place. Functional medicine often looks at different markers, in more depth and more broadly, than a conventional panel.
Why “normal” doesn’t always mean “healthy”
Standard NHS and routine private panels are designed to catch disease — clear-cut, established conditions with well-defined thresholds. They’re excellent at that job. But they’re not designed to catch the grey area before disease: the hormonal imbalance that hasn’t yet tipped into a diagnosis, the nutrient deficiency sitting just inside the “normal” range but still low enough to affect how you feel, the low-grade inflammation, or the gut imbalance that doesn’t show up on a standard stool culture.
This is the gap most people fall into. Your results are normal by the reference range used to flag disease — but that range was never built to answer the question you’re actually asking, which is “why do I feel unwell?”
What “looking at the whole picture” actually means
At Mosaic Medical, this is the question we start every consultation with. Rather than treating each symptom in isolation, or stopping the investigation once disease has been ruled out, we look at how your systems interact: gut health, hormones, nutrient status, inflammation, sleep, and stress all influence each other, and symptoms in one area are often driven by something happening in another.
In practice, that means:
- A longer, more detailed clinical history than a standard appointment allows — because the pattern of your symptoms is often the biggest clue.
- Advanced functional testing that goes beyond a standard panel — including detailed hormone profiling, nutrient status, inflammatory markers, and comprehensive stool/microbiome analysis where relevant.
- A doctor-led team that has time to connect the results across all of these areas, rather than reviewing them one test at a time.
You don’t need a diagnosis to get help
One of the most common misconceptions is that you need a name for what’s wrong before anyone can help you. You don’t. Risk reduction, symptom management, and prevention are valid reasons to seek care in their own right — you don’t have to wait until something is seriously wrong to get a proper, whole-picture assessment.

A free discovery call is a good starting point — it gives you space to talk through what you’ve already had checked, what’s still unexplained, and whether a more detailed functional assessment makes sense for you.
