Functional Medicine for Thyroid Conditions with Mosaic Medical
What Is Autoimmune Thyroid Disease?
Autoimmune thyroid disease occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland. The two most common forms are:
- Hashimoto’s thyroiditis – leading to an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
- Graves’ disease – leading to an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
How It Affects People:
Your thyroid regulates metabolism, energy production, body temperature, and brain function. When it comes under immune attack, the results are wide-ranging and often misdiagnosed or misunderstood.
- Fatigue, anxiety, or depression
- Unexplained weight changes (gain in Hashimoto’s, loss in Graves’)
- Brain fog and poor concentration
- Hair thinning or dry skin
- Palpitations or feeling cold/hot all the time
- Menstrual irregularities
Conventional treatment usually involves hormone suppression (Graves’) or replacement (Hashimoto’s). While important, these approaches rarely investigate why the autoimmune process began.
Our Functional Medicine Approach
At Mosaic Medical, we work to uncover why your immune system is attacking your thyroid and create a personalised strategy to address both the autoimmune process and your thyroid health.
- Increased gut permeability and microbiome imbalances
- Food sensitivities
- Nutrient deficiencies (selenium, zinc, iodine, vitamin D)
- Underlying chronic infections
- Chronic stress and cortisol dysregulation
- Environmental toxin exposure
- Comprehensive thyroid hormonal testing including TSH, T4, T3 and thyroid antibodies
- Gut microbiome, infection, and food sensitivity analysis
- Anti-inflammatory and thyroid-supportive nutrition
- Nutritional analysis to ensure optimal thyroid support
- Immune modulation with botanicals and supplements
- Stress and lifestyle coaching for adrenal-thyroid synergy
What Makes Our Clinic Different
- Root-cause treatment – we look at why the autoimmune attack is happening, not just at hormone levels
- Comprehensive testing – going well beyond standard thyroid blood work
- Safe prescribing – as GMC-registered doctors, we can prescribe or recommend supplements, nutrition, and lifestyle interventions
- Collaboration with endocrinology – we work directly with a consultant endocrinologist (at no extra cost) to ensure safe prescribing, including T3 if appropriate
- Patient education – empowering you with knowledge so you can manage your condition for life
Common Root Causes We Investigate
- Gut dysfunction and intestinal permeability
- Food sensitivities (especially gluten and dairy)
- Chronic infections (e.g. EBV, H. pylori, SIBO)
- Nutrient depletion (selenium, iron, zinc, vitamin D)
- Environmental toxins and endocrine disruptors
- HPA axis and adrenal imbalances
FAQ – Autoimmune Thyroid Disease & Functional Medicine
Do you test for thyroid antibodies like TPO and TG?
Yes. We check TSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPO, TG) to give a full picture of thyroid function and autoimmunity.
Can functional medicine reverse Hashimoto’s or Graves’?
We have seen patients whose blood tests no longer show signs of autoimmune thyroid disease. However, the autoimmune process cannot be fully reversed and relapses can occur if triggers resurface. Our focus is on long-term management and reducing autoimmune activity.
Do I have to stay on thyroid medication forever?
It depends. Some patients reduce dosage, but others need long-term support depending on thyroid damage before treatment begins. For example, if you’ve been on levothyroxine for 10 years, it is unlikely to be stopped completely, but we can help optimise your health and improve how you feel.
Can you help if I’ve had my thyroid removed or ablated?
Yes. Even without a thyroid gland, the immune and metabolic imbalances that led to the disease remain important to address.
Do you prescribe T3?
Yes, for those who clearly benefit. This is done with input from our Consultant Endocrinologist, with careful monitoring of blood tests and symptoms. We may also suggest genetic testing to understand whether you convert T4 to T3 optimally before prescribing.
Do you offer remote consultations?
Yes. We support patients virtually across the UK, and also in person if clinically needed.
How do appointments work?
Your first appointment is 90 minutes, with your doctor reviewing your case beforehand. During this consultation, we will discuss your symptoms, history, and next steps, including any testing.
Does the appointment price include testing?
No. Testing is charged separately and only recommended if it will directly influence your management.
I already have test results and a diagnosis – can you still help?
Yes. You can upload your results in advance. If there are many, there may be a small preparation fee, but this will be agreed with you beforehand.
How does the nutrition side work?
Nutrition is key to thyroid health. We provide personalised dietary guidance, and in complex cases, we recommend working with our nutritional therapist alongside your doctor for more comprehensive support.
Ready to Take Charge of Your Thyroid Health?
We recommend starting with a free discovery call with one of our doctors or nutritional therapists. This allows you to discuss your personal situation, ask questions, and explore whether our approach is right for you. You can also review our doctors’ profiles and choose the one who best fits your needs.
