A Root-Cause Approach to Histamine Issues and MCAS

What Are Histamine Issues and MCAS?

Histamine intolerance and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) occur when histamine builds up in the body or is released too easily from mast cells. Histamine is a natural chemical involved in immune and inflammatory responses, but when present in excess, it can cause a wide range of symptoms that mimic allergies or autoimmune conditions. This may be due to cells releasing histamine inappropriately, and/or reduced detoxification ability, which itself has a wide range of causes.

How It Affects People:

Histamine issues can create diverse symptoms, making them difficult to recognise and often misdiagnosed. Patients are sometimes told their symptoms are “all in their head,” leading to frustration and uncertainty.

Typical symptoms include:

Conventional treatment often relies on antihistamines, corticosteroids, or immune-suppressing medications. While these may reduce symptoms, they rarely address the root causes. Specialist support for MCAS is also very limited in the UK.

FAQ – Histamine Issues & MCAS

What is Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)?

MCAS occurs when mast cells release too much histamine and other chemicals, causing widespread symptoms like rashes, headaches, fatigue, and digestive problems. Triggers can include foods, environmental factors, and stress.

Yes. We look at the bigger picture — from immune balance to gut health and detox pathways — to identify what’s driving your histamine problems. Treatment is then tailored to your unique needs.

Yes. We use advanced testing for histamine, immune function, gut health, and nutrient status. However, it’s important to note that there’s not yet a single definitive diagnostic test for MCAS or histamine intolerance — diagnosis remains largely clinical.

Treatment may include dietary adjustments (e.g. low-histamine diet), mast cell stabilisation, supplementation (including DAO support), stress reduction, sleep support, and detoxification strategies. Nervous system regulation is often a priority.

Yes. We support patients virtually across the UK, with in-person consultations if clinically indicated.

Your first appointment is 90 minutes. Your doctor will have reviewed your history in advance, and together you’ll create a plan that may include testing and immediate symptom support.

No. Testing is separate and only recommended when it will meaningfully change your treatment plan.

Yes. You can upload existing results before your consultation. If there are many, a small preparation fee may apply, but this will be discussed with you in advance.

We provide tailored nutrition advice, including guidance on low-histamine diets. For complex cases, we recommend also working with our nutritional therapist to accelerate progress.
