Functional Medicine for Food Sensitivities and Intolerances
Personalised Support to Identify Triggers, Heal the Gut, and Restore Tolerance.
Struggling with bloating, fatigue, skin issues, or other unexplained symptoms? At Mosaic Medical, we work with patients across the UK to uncover hidden food sensitivities and intolerances using a root-cause functional medicine approach.
What Are Food Sensitivities and Intolerances?
Food sensitivities and intolerances are not the same as food allergies.
- Food allergies typically trigger an immediate, sometimes life-threatening reaction (via IgE antibodies).
- Food sensitivities and intolerances often cause delayed symptoms — hours or even days later — which makes them much harder to detect.
- Bloating, gas, or abdominal discomfort
- Brain fog and fatigue
- Skin problems (eczema, acne, rashes)
- Joint or muscle pain
- Headaches or migraines
- Anxiety, low mood, or irritability
Because conventional tests usually only check for IgE (allergy markers), food intolerances are often missed. At the same time, many commercial tests found online aren’t scientifically reliable. A structured, evidence-based approach is key.
Our Functional Medicine Approach
At Mosaic, we go beyond simply identifying trigger foods. Our aim is to understand why your body has become sensitive and work to restore balance so that, in many cases, foods can be safely reintroduced.
- Elimination and reintroduction diets guided by nutritional therapy and health coaching
- Food sensitivity testing (IgG, IgA, and complement-based tests where appropriate)
- Comprehensive gut health assessment using both clinical evaluation and advanced testing
- Immune system support, as food intolerance is driven by immune activation
- Targeted nutritional therapy to heal and repair the gut lining
The long-term goal is not restriction, but tolerance — enabling you to return to a varied, nourishing diet.
What Makes Mosaic Medical Different?
- We investigate why you’re reacting, not just what you’re reacting to
- We use advanced, functional tests to detect immune reactivity
- We consider the whole person: gut health, hormones, detox pathways, stress and more
- We create highly personalised treatment plans unique to your biology and lifestyle
- We are GMC-registered doctors, combining medical training with functional medicine expertise
- We focus on long-term health, helping you broaden your nutrition rather than live with unnecessary restrictions
By identifying and addressing these, we can reduce your risk and improve day-to-day wellbeing.
Common Root Causes We Explore
Food intolerances rarely exist in isolation. We look for the underlying drivers, which may include:
- Intestinal hyperpermeability (“leaky gut”)
- Gut infections or dysbiosis (imbalances in the gut microbiome)
- Immune dysregulation
- Cortisol and stress-related issues
- Overuse of medications (e.g. antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors)
- Toxin exposure and detoxification overload
- Genetic predispositions (e.g. lactase deficiency causing lactose intolerance)
Food Sensitivities FAQs
What’s the difference between food allergies and sensitivities?
Allergies trigger an immediate immune response (via IgE antibodies) and can be life-threatening. Sensitivities involve IgG or IgA immune activation, causing delayed reactions that are harder to trace.
Can I test for food sensitivities at Mosaic Medical?
Yes. We offer advanced testing alongside elimination diets, always with the aim of healing the gut so that foods may eventually be reintroduced.
Will I have to avoid these foods forever?
In most cases, no. Once the gut is healed, many foods can be safely reintroduced. The exception is when genetics play a role, such as in lactose intolerance.
Do you offer remote consultations?
Yes. Mosaic Medical is a fully virtual clinic serving patients throughout the UK.
How do appointments work?
Your first appointment is 90 minutes long. Beforehand, your doctor will review your case in detail. During the session we’ll explore your symptoms, history, and potential triggers, then outline next steps and testing if needed.
Does the appointment fee include testing?
No. Testing is decided on an individual basis, depending on your case. Costs are always discussed before proceeding.
I already have test results — can you still help?
Yes. You can upload your results before your consultation, and we’ll review them together. (For large volumes of results, a small preparation fee may apply, always agreed in advance.)
Do you provide nutritional support as well?
Yes. Our doctors advise on diet and lifestyle, and when needed, we recommend sessions with our in-house nutritional therapist for more complex cases.
